Campaign strategy
Dear Friends,
We're gearing up for the fall campaign. It should
be exciting, as we have a real chance to win!
This email is divided into

WHAT YOU CAN DO
OVERVIEW
I can count on about 15% of the vote- the usual 3%
of Green votes, plus the 12% Democratic protest vote that went to Mitch Clogg in
the primary.
In 2006, Mike Thompson got 66% of the votes, the
Republican got 29.4%, and the Green got 3%. Assuming the Republican continues
to get 30%,- if I receive 36%, Thompson will lose with 34% of the
vote.
This means that if we can add 21% of voters to the
15% we already have, I can actually win the House seat for District 1. This
would be a first- there has never been a Green in the House of
Representatives.
We need to target progressive Democrats
especially, who are fed up with Mike Thompson's hypocrisy. The Republican
candidate, Zane Starkewolf, is fairly liberal and antiwar, so we probably won't
get too many GOP voters switching to Green. My platform is designed to appeal
to the poor and underprivileged, who usually don't vote, as well as to middle
class voters who are hurting from the credit crunch and from inflation, so we
need to target those groups.
I've attached the updated brochure, which includes
platform points instead of the previous mission statement. A version with
pictures ( a head shot of me, a podium shot of me and McKinney) inside is also
available. This is a large file, and can be downloaded from https://rcpt.yousendit.com/592771245/0db98b789e426

Important fact: around 50-60% of District 1 uses
mail-in ballots. The mail-in ballots go out from the county clerks' offices on
October 6th. This has several implications:
1) The usual phone-banking- get out the vote on
election day- is less important.
2) the majority of campaigning has to be done by
and around October 6th.
3) the post offices are a key location for
tabling- people pick up their ballots there, return their ballots there-
especially people who are rural and don't get mail delivered to their homes-
also transients and homeless people, who are more likely to vote for me.
Everyone uses the post office.
STRATEGIC GOALS
1) Name recognition- people are much
more likely to vote for someone they've heard of.
2) Building credibility- many people
believe that voting Green is "wasting" one's vote. It's important to understand
that I CAN WIN! I have a solid resume and would make a good Congressperson.
People respect physicians- my MD should be highlighted.
3) Taking advantage of voter
dissatisfaction- Thompson is part of the Pelosi group that has enabled Bush to
continue the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. People need to see through his
hypocrisy, and replace him with a new person who is not beholden to
corporate/war/oil profiteers.
STRATEGY
1) Debates- we will are working with nonpartisan
groups like the Alliance for Democracy, to set up a series of debates with me,
Zane Starkewolf (who is friendly and willing to work with us) and Mike Thompson,
who may or may not show up. These should generate lots of publicity, since they
are formal election events in an election year. If Thompson shows up, I'll put
him on the spot, if he doesn't, he'll be embarassed.
Timeline- late August through early October.
Key cities- Del Norte, Eureka/Arcata, Garberville,
Ft. Bragg, Pt. Arena, Ukiah, Willits, Kelseyville, Cloverdale/Windsor, Napa,
Davis/Woodland/West Sacramento.
2) Bumper stickers- in our largely rural district,
people are constantly on the road. Bumper stickers will promote name
recognition- they are cheap, show voter advocacy of my campaign, and can be
sold to raise money.
3) tabling in front of post offices- register
voters, sell bumper stickers, give out brochures in front of as many post
offices as possible throughout District1. We should start now, and plan to
table intensely around the first two weeks of October. This means recruiting
and training volunteers to table in every area.
The campaign office will supply brochures and
bumper stickers. Volunteers can keep some of the cash they collect for lunch
money. The rest, and checks, can be mailed to Jim Houle-

We will send you a list of potential volunteers in
your county, and ask you to recruit volunteers from your Green lists and any
other sources you may have.
4) In addition to speaking at events, I'll be
fundraising and calling in to radio talk shows all over the district. I'll be
writing updates for email lists and the website. www.carolwolmanforcongress.com
I'll be in close touch with Jim Houle, who will be in touch with you.
5) Our media arm, Paradise Cove Productions, has
produced a 20 minute video and arranged distribution on many of the District 1
cable and PBS stations, as well as a 2 minute version. These will also be on
youtube, my website, www.afterdowningstreet.org, www.democrats.com, and as many other
websites as we can find. These videos, as well as High Crimes (27 minutes of
live footage- evidence of impeachable offenses) are also available for house
parties and theatrical events.
